Japan Pavilion at London Design Biennale 2023 highlights projects by artists, designers and activists in rural Japan
tackling issues such as depopulation and an ageing society. Their work is inspired by interactions with local people, by
local traditions, customs and deep history.

In this exhibition, we have sheep-shaped chairs and stools designed and fabricated in collaboration with artists in Japan
and a workshop here in the UK. The furniture pieces form part of a series of furniture and products called "Animal →
Furniture" envisioned by Katsunobu Yoshida (吉田勝信) and Tatsuhiro Ara (荒 達宏) in Yamagata, Japan. Their
purpose was to realise a manufacturing process that not only utilise local materials but also made in collaboration with
local people, using motifs meaningful and relevant to local people, culture and history.
